Consultancy

Our Work in Action
BFT provides consultancy and advisory work on local food systems, enterprise, marketing and technology.
Here’s some recent projects we’ve been involved in:

Economic Advisory
Better Food Traders sat on the Steering Group for the Economic Case for Local Food research, helping to guide a project examining the economic value and impact of local food systems. Drawing on our experience supporting independent food traders across the network, we helped shape the research’s direction and ensure its findings reflect the realities faced by local food businesses. The research strengthens the evidence base for investment in local food, supporting the case for policy and funding change.

Regional Policy Development
We’re proud to have contributed to Jersey’s new Food and Nutrition Framework, helping shape an approach that makes nutritious, sustainable food more available to every Islander. The framework champions local food systems and healthier retail environments, values at the heart of everything we do at Better Food Traders.

Communications Food Partnership Training
BFT delivered a communications workshop for the Pembrokeshire Local Food Partnership’s Community Growing Network. The session tackled a common challenge: communicating effectively to boost funding, volunteers and visibility. Drawing on BFT’s expertise in comms for values-led food initiatives, participants left with practical tools to tell their story and grow their reach.

Communications Strategy Development
Better Food Traders facilitated the development of a communications strategy for Good Food Bucks, working closely with its partners and stakeholders to shape a shared approach. The process brought together diverse voices across the project to align on messaging and priorities, resulting in a strategy designed to support Good Food Bucks’ ongoing communications and outreach.

National Policy Development
Better Food Traders contributed to the Local Food Growth Plan, a two-year collaborative project led by Sustain, the Landworkers’ Alliance, Sustainable Food Trust, Pasture for Life and the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission, setting a UK-wide roadmap for growing the local food sector. Drawing on our experience supporting regional food hubs and independent retailers, our input shaped the plan’s recommendations on infrastructure and marketing, helping build a practical action plan for a fairer, more resilient local food system.

Market Development
BFT supported ‘Our Food 1200’ in Wales on Growing the Market for Local Food with the hope of increasing food production, creating jobs, new supply chains, and fair pricing for farms.
