Another great Veg Bag from Crop Drop

Crop Drop is a not-for-profit veg scheme run by Haringey residents and delivering delicious, sustainable fruit and veg within the London Borough of Haringey.

Crop Drop started with Rachel Dring’s obsession with food – cooking it, eating it and pondering where it comes from. This developed into a growing sense of wanting to contribute towards a fairer, more sustainable food system that gives people meaningful relationships with food and the people that produce it.

With the help of her trusty friend Yao and guidance from the Growing Communities Start Up Programme, Crop Drop was born and started trading in October 2013.

Crop Drop is now a small team of dedicated local people that are (almost) as obsessed with food as Rachel!

Crop Drop – why we’re a BFT

We only source produce that is certified organic, through the Soil Association, Organic Farmers and Growers Association or the Biodynamic accreditation. We also consider using produce from farms that avoid the use of agrochemical inputs and minimise damage to the environment and wildlife, for example those that are in the process of transforming to an organic system, as long as they can prove that they are working to organic standards.

We buy direct and from small to medium-scale farming operations as close to us as possible. We prioritize sourcing direct from small farms and supplement this with organic produce from wholesalers.

We appreciate that farming and food should not be treated as a commodity and that the price of the produce must reflect its true value. We engage in open dialogue with suppliers so we can take into account all the real costs associated with producing their crop and pay them a price that reflects this.

We communicate the true cost of the food to our customers and charge them a price that is fair to them while reflecting the value of the product and paying ourselves a fair price for the service we provide. We keep our overheads and operational costs as low as possible in order to give customers the best possible price.

Real human connection is promoted at every level of the business –we visit our suppliers in person and arrange regular farm visits for customers to meet the farms that supply the scheme. We involve local people in the running of the scheme. We prioritise using services provided by local people and businesses.

Above all, we want people to come together around great food and encourage them to exercise more power and control over the local food system.

With the challenges we face from peak oil, climate change, our unsustainable growth economy, inequality and corporatization of everything, the only way that change will come is through people starting to behave differently and spend their money differently.

As a grass-roots community-led initiative, we’re exploring our potential to change the current paradigm for the good of people and the planet, rather than for profit.
